Collagen supplements get a lot of skeptical looks, often for good reason. This conversation gets into what actually happens once collagen is consumed, how peptides drive real activity, and the clinical work behind Geltor’s approach to biotech-made collagen.

There’s real skepticism around collagen supplements. Is that fair?

Alex: Absolutely. And we were skeptical, too. That’s why we built PrimaColl and put a big bet on developing a collagen product with amazing science behind it, and ran the biggest-ever ingestible collagen clinical study, comparing it to a really well-known collagen product and a placebo. So no one’s more skeptical than us when it comes to the science behind these types of products. And we think this is where biotechnology can really shine.

Nick: There’s a lot of miscommunication out there with collagen, especially in the marketing language. People tend to say you eat it and it goes into your body and becomes part of your body, like a structure. In reality, you eat it and it breaks down into amino acids and some peptides, and those peptides are what bring about any activity.

One of the things we did was a study at UC Davis, and it was really nice confirmatory work showing our collagen stimulates collagen production in the human body. Animal collagen also stimulates collagen production in the human body, but consuming something like whey protein does not directly stimulate it.

So it’s not just amino acid consumption that does everything: when you consume it, it matters, the breakdown, what it forms, whether it’s just single amino acids or how many of these di-/tri-peptides can actually survive and enter the bloodstream.
