Alex: PrimaColl is a great example of what biotech does best. When you have a traditionally complicated mixture of things, and inside that mixture you have an active piece in a small concentration, biotech has historically been prized for going and homing in on just that active piece, finding a way to make it super efficiently, and delivering it without the extra stuff.
So you’re not consuming filler, you’re just consuming the thing that’s actually doing the job. I think this is a really elegant example of what biodesign is all about.
Nick: Exactly. From animal extraction, you get a soup, based off of what’s most available. So you get a soup of mostly Type 1 collagen, and Type 3 collagen also contains a lot of Type 1 in it, plus a chunk of other junk-like protein sequences, everything from the extraction of hides and bones from animals. The discoloration often comes from blood.
Most people who’ve tried animal collagen take a little pause before they drink ours, because they’re used to the strong animal flavor: fish collagen often has a fishy flavor, same with pork or bovine collagen having that animal flavor. But when you actually isolate these active regions without the animal, it obviously ends up lacking a lot of those flavors.
Alex: The consumer endpoint our customers have gotten really excited about is that instead of 10g or 20g as the serving you need to see a benefit, we’ve been able to show in the clinical study that one gram a day, or 2.5g a day, is really all you need with PrimaColl to get the same or a better benefit.
And what’s incredibly exciting is you can have more convenient, more delightful, more pleasurable form factors for making this part of your daily routine: a shot, gummies, coffee pods.
It really opens up an entirely new frontier from a product design perspective, for both consumers and the companies making products for them to explore. That’s empowered by biodesign. It’s one of those things you don’t really appreciate until you’re actually holding the product in your hand.
